2007 Work Plan

Ecosystem Defense Comment on all agency actions on the Clearwater, Nez Perce, Idaho portion of the Bitterroot (all Wilderness except for Magruder corridor), southern St. Joe National Forests Increase involvement on BLM inholdings in the Clearwater region, where appropriate and resources permit. Prioritize projects for commenting, public involvement, and appealing. Be proactive, where possible, by following up issues with media releases and contact, administrative channels, and other avenues. Integrate volunteers in any or all of these projects when appropriate. Education & Outreach Newsletter out in a timely manner (4 times per year including update). Produce special issue alerts on an as needed basis. Produce a mailing to members for important programs, events and presentations. Use email and the newsletter calendar to communicate other events and fast-breaking news. Hold organizing potlucks at regular semi-monthly intervals during the school year except near breaks. Organize the agendas to increase turnout, invite mixing and socializing, invite participation, and provide an idea of what to expect at the meetings. Organize Field Trips semi-monthly with Sierra Club and other local organizations when possible to visit roadless areas proposed for Wilderness in NREPA, discuss crucial issues, and to get folks excited about the wild. Plan one or two educational event per semester outside of educational potlucks. Coordinate with other entities to avoid conflicts in scheduling and to increase interest and participation (PCEI, Palouse Audubon, Idaho Native Plants, etc. Develop series of digital slide shows/power point presentations to have on hand depending on the target audience. Actively seek out opportunities in schools and with community groups. Use roadless powerpoint for presentations when applicable. Continue to table at Moscow Farmer's Market, UI, WSU, LCSC, Palouse Mall Fund-raising Plan fund-raising events to maximize exposure and revenue. Participate in the Moscow Renaissance Fair. Plan concerts and other events as both fund-raisers and for community exposure. Cooperative Issues Engage in proactive plans for keeping the Clearwater wild. In addition to legislative vehicles like NREPA plan to do the following for the coming year: Keep up the focus on the Forest Plan revision process. Keep the cedars report, an economic paper, water quality, and roadless/wilderness policy in the limelight. This will entail considerable coordination with the Nez Perce Tribe and community outreach and necessitate a coordinated plan for addressing outreach. Bring on a NREPA/Wilderness Intern to assist with the development of a Wilderness/NREPA Powerpoint presentation, strategy for creating public interest in NREPA and Wilderness, locally and regionally. Make Clearwater roadless areas a priority via NREPA.. Increase their visibility through hikes, outreach, and handouts/web, and special presentations. Continue to support efforts on salmon/steelhead restoration and bull trout recovery. Print Brochure Continue to monitor South Fork Clearwater in recovery. Change the volunteer forest watch monitoring program to make it more flexible. Continue with ORV project begun last year which includes monitoring, data gathering, hikes and citizen involvement. Plan for in field research time in work schedules. During the summer, try to be in the field enough as staff and/or volunteers, to remain effective in advocating for the Wild and in understanding the issues on-the-ground. Rather than focus on timber sale monitoring (though important) be flexible and look at various resources. Prioritize litigation possibilities (ORVs, wolves, other logging projects). Work with the UI Environmental Law Society and others to make advances in this area Misc. Complete/update our fundraising plan and budget in early 2007. This will include revenue goals as a percentage of fundraising Hold at least 4 Board meetings during the year. Integrate board and staff work into a cohesive whole. Hold staff meetings once a week, at a minimum, to coordinate and plan activities together. Evaluate the effectiveness of these meetings every three months. Prioritize Conference Attendance. Events include Wild Rockies Rendezvous, Eugene Law Conference (March), NREPA lobbying weeks.
