Education & Outreach Director Job Description Missions 1. To educate people about the rich natural heritage of the Wild Clearwater Country and the threats facing the wildlands found here. 2. To engage people in NC Idaho and Eastern Washington for support and protection of Idahos wildlands. 3. To organize community events and outdoor activities. 4. Be responsible for the newsletter and web page maintenance. 5. To coordinate media and publicity with other staff and volunteers. 6. To assist and lead efforts in the procurement of grants and funds which support the greater missions of FOC. People Effective communication skills are an important quality for the Education & Outreach Director (EOD). The EOD will be responsible for helping to develop and maintain relationships with regional communities (Moscow, Lewiston, Kooskia, Orofino, etc.), and other active organizations such as environmental, recreation and wildlife groups, etc. The EOD will be responsible for coordinating volunteers in conjunction with FOC board members and Ecosystem Defense Director. This entails organizing volunteers for events and speaking engagements, newsletters and other mailings, special projects, fundraisers, and outdoor activities. EOD will be responsible for recruiting, hiring, and coordinating outreach interns for both spring and fall semesters and throughout the summer. The EOD will also draft volunteer and intern job descriptions for research, ecosystem defense, technology, etc., with the help of Ecosystem Defense Director, and advertise and recruit for these positions. Primary responsibilities: a. Assist in developing and maintaining relations with regional communities and organizations on behalf of FOC (along with Forest Watch Director and Program Director) b. Organizing volunteers c. Maintaining the membership database d. Compose and send out weekly e-mail to members. e. Coordinate monthly potlucks. f. Some administrative duties i.e., assist in mail runs, answer phones, respond to inquiries and other office duties as is necessary. Events FOC sponsors a series of events, often in conjunction with other organizations, of an educational nature. These events are routinely held on a monthly basis during fall, winter and spring. FOC also co-sponsors hikes and snowshoe trips with the Palouse Group Sierra Club. Publicity, coordination, and organization of these events are the duties of the Outreach Director. Primary responsibilities: a. Educate the public through educational programs, issue oriented potlucks, outreach to schools, and field trips. Employ a diverse set of educational materials on various environmental issues and natural history topics. b. Contacting and organizing volunteers in conjunction with the Ecosystem Defense Director c. Develop new educational materials including natural history shorts and accompanying slideshows. d. Work with other staff members on the development of educational materials for grassroots activists. Media The EOD will be a public figure, an educator and a leader in the campaign for protection of Idahos wildlands. Interacting with the media, and coordinating media and publicity with the Ecosystem Defense Director will be expected. The EOD will be responsible for coordinating publicity with the FOC Ecosystem Defense Director for various outreach events, news releases. The Outreach Director is responsible for helping coordinate mailing of newsletters, action alerts, and invitations to special events with volunteers, board members, and the Ecosystem Defense Director. Primary responsibilities: a. Coordinate media efforts b. Maintain updated media list c. Help to establish relationships with key media representatives d. Serve as a point person for all incoming media inquiries e. Prepare media kits f. Write and distribute news releases g. Write articles for various publications including the newsletter. h. Help grassroots members secure media placement regionally and locally i. Oversee development of FOC newsletter. j. Oversee development of and maintenance of website and brochures. k. Routinely prepare a column in Moscows Coop newsletter dedicated to current issues l. List FOC events and outings on the Moscow Community Events website m. Maintain regular displays of regional issues at the public library and the Moscow Chamber of Commerce Funds The EOD will assist and sometimes lead efforts in the procurement of grants and funds directed at outreach programs which support the greater missions of FOC. Many duties will be shared with the FOC Ecosystem Defense Director.
