FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER 3, 2007 CONTACT: Will Boyd, FRIENDS OF THE
CLEARWATER (208) 882-9755 foc@friendsoftheclearwater.org Stewart Brandborg,
Lifelong Wilderness Advocate to Speak, Friday, November 9 Stewart Brandborg,
son of a long time Bitterroot Forest Supervisor, who led the Wilderness
Society in Washington, D.C. for twelve years, did the seminal research on
mountain goats in the Rockies, and led successful efforts to expand the
Wilderness Preservation System in the lower 48 and in Alaska soon after
passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964, will be speaking in Moscow, Friday,
November 9. “Brandy,” grew up in the Bitterroots and returned to the area
following successful leadership roles with TWS, the National Wildlife
Federation, and the National Park Service. He worked with TWS under the
leadership of Wilderness Act Howard Zahniser, and then directed the
organization for the longest stint of any other director, with the exception
of famed wildlife biologist Olaus Murie. According to his closest friends and
those that worked with him over the years his greatest accomplishment was
organizing citizens on a local level; building awareness and momentum for
wilderness protection through grassroots community building. Brandborg will
be speaking at Friends of the Clearwater’s annual meeting celebration at
the 1912 Building (412 East 3rd St.), Friday, November 9 at 6:30 p.m. Friends
of the Clearwater was founded in 1987 by a group of citizens concerned about
loss of pubic wildlands in the Clearwater drainage and declining water
quality due to an increasing and unregulated logging and road-building
program by the US Forest Service. Today FOC serves its dual mission of
Education and Ecosystem Defense by presenting educational programs to local
schools and community groups, leading public hikes, conducting citizen
science monitoring projects, and by responding to USFS project proposals to
ensure the agency abides by environmental rules and regulations. The annual
meeting celebration seeks to thank all of FOC’s members, volunteers, and
supporters for another year of their efforts while celebrating the wild
Clearwater country. As always, the event is a potluck dinner and includes,
wonderful live music, a silent auction, and lively program. Beer and wine
will be served by Mikey’s Gyros. The general public is invited to attend.
