Expert Discussion Thursday Night, April 17: "Wolverines:Vanishing into thin air?"

Fate of Wolverine to be Discussed at Educational Presentation

The future of the wolverine will be the subject of tomorrow (Thursday, April 17) evening's presentation to be held at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Idaho's College of Natural Resources building, room 10.

David Gaillard, mesocarnivore, or medium sized carnivore expert, will discuss the conservation efforts being taken to protect the wolverine. Lisette Waits, Associate Professor for the University of Idaho’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, will discuss genetic diversity among wolverines in Canada and North America.

Gaillard said that there have been several species that have been out of the limelight and neglected.

“I think it’s a good time to have this event because we’re just finding out a great deal of new information on wolverines,” Gaillard said.

Waits said that the genetic results of the research she has done on the wolverine show evidence of isolation, or lower levels of genetic diversity, for populations in Idaho and Montana compared to populations in northern Canada and Alaska.

“My work is going to review what’s known about gene flow,” Waits said.

The presentation is sponsored by Friends of the Clearwater, Palouse Group of the Sierra Club, UI Environmental Club and Student Organization for People and the Environment.
