With the summer solstice just a few days away, we wanted to give you an update about some important wildland issues.
We are currently planning a 3-day celebration for September 12-14 at the Wilderness Gateway Campground on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Wilderness Watch and the US Forest Service are the other co-sponsors. The event will feature engaging speakers, lively dialogue, food/drink, music by Dana Lyons, children’s activities and a traditional-skills demonstration. Click here to learn more.
We are currently accepting orders for the official 50th Anniversary Wilderness Act posters. The colorful artwork is by renowned artist Monte Dolack. Posters are $25 each plus shipping. All proceeds benefit FOC. Click here to order yours today!
The Port of Lewiston recently announced that they have earmarked tens of thousands of dollars for “legal expenses” regarding potential future legal action towards gaining access for megaloads on Highway 12. Keep in mind the Nez Perce Tribe and the US Forest Service are still in court-ordered consultation and the federal injunction handed down by Judge B. Lynn Winmill is still in place. Please consider writing a letter to the editor of your local paper about the Port’s announcement.
Speaking of big oil, our friend Dana Lyons is coming through Moscow on Monday June 23 as part of his Crude Awakening Oil Train Tour. The show starts at 7pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church. Learn more.
We are proud to announce that we are teaming-up with the Palouse group-Sierra Club for a weekend car-camping trip to the Little North Fork Clearwater River on July 25-27. Hiking, fly-fishing, and relaxing will be part of the festivities. Call our office 882-9755 for carpool and camping details.
And if you love free flowing rivers, there is a public meeting next Thursday June 26 at the Idaho Fish & Game Department in Lewiston. The Northwest Power and Conservation Council is taking comments on mitigation efforts and its Draft Amended Fish & Wildlife Program.
