Dear wildlanders,
If you have not heard, the USDA Wildlife Services, in conjunction with the Idaho Fish & Game Department, just completed an aerial gunning operation resulting in 20 dead wolves. It took place in the “Lolo Zone” on the Clearwater National Forest. Read our joint news release.
A public rally will take place in support of wolves on Monday February 15 on the steps of the state capital in Boise, Idaho at 1:00pm Mountain Standard Time. The peaceful demonstration is family-friendly and folks are encouraged to bring signs, banners and musical instruments.
The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests is seeking public comment on two post-fire “salvage” timber sales: Upper Lolo Salvage Project and Woodrat Salvage Project. Below are talking points for consideration:
1. Wildland fires are an important component of a functioning ecosystem.
2. Logging in post-fire habitat can badly damage soils critical for forest reproduction and regrowth.
3. Removing post-fire trees/snags/debris robs crucial habitat for species that rely on post-fire habitat for food and shelter.
Deadline for submitting comments on both projects is Sunday February 28. Please email comments-northern-nezperce@fs.fed.us to raise your concerns. Click here to learn more about the projects.
