The long days of summer are upon us. We wanted to share some important updates on issues where you can weigh in and help. Please stay safe this summer, whether you are about town or roaming the backcountry.
The Forest Service has not yet made a final decision on the new White Pine Project, a proposed timber sale. The area is important because it is one of the larger undeveloped areas on the Palouse Ranger District. The proposal will affect the White Pine Scenic Drive, with some logging adjacent to the road. Friends of the Clearwater filed a formal objection to the proposal and we are awaiting a decision. Please use our action alert here to write the District Ranger.
The State of Montana established its Grizzly Bear Advisory Council to outline a long-term vision for grizzlies in Montana. Some council members want to recommend trophy hunting for any Montana grizzly populations if the federal government ever removes Endangered Species Act protections. Trophy hunting would prevent recovery in the wild Clearwater Country, as migrating bears are likely to be killed. Read our alert here. Tell the Council that such a proposal won’t recovery grizzly bears and share your opposition to trophy hunting.
